QUESTION OF THE WEEK, MAY 2
It is written: "Do not love the world or the things in the world" (I John 2). What is the "world" and what are the "things in the world" and how do we determine if we love the ways of this world? Please respond in a couple of sentences if you have time. Also, if it is something you can share: Is there some aspect of this world that you have had to let go of in order to demonstrate your love for Jesus and obey His word?
Some responses so far:

The world is the society we live in and the "things" are the stuff society values. We know if we love them if the things or the attainment of them occupy the majority of our brain time and our daily activities are focused on them as well
I have subscribed to the magazine Vanity Fair for many years and have enjoyed it very much. In the past few months, however, they have printed some virulently anti-Christian pieces. With the first one, I was disturbed by their bias (it was a piece on the Creation Museum), but then it faded into the background. With this last one, an attack on the Ten Commandments, I believe I can no longer call myself a Christian and continue to support this magazine. It may be a small thing, but I will no longer subscribe.

The world in rebellion against God; the world as anithesis to all that is of God and his Holiness; it is not the physical earth that is in view, but the world as worldliness, living as though God hasn't spoken. Do we love God and the things of Christ supremely? Then we will love his grace and love his Word.

In this context John seems to be addressing the fallen system, not creation. Though one of the ways of the world is to worship parts of creation.

the things of the world are the actions, attitudes and objects that derive from that culture. they strive to be our Treasure and our First Desire in place of Jesus, who properly deserves those titles. great questions. hope all is well in NC!
